Pro Wrestler Goldberg Favors Muscle Cars; Large Crowds and Over 90 Percent Sales Highlight Opening Two Days at Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Jan. 20 Thousands of car enthusiasts,
collectors and former racing greats streamed into the world-renown Barrett-
Jackson Classic Car Auction Thursday and Friday, marking the midway point of
this four-day auction and lifestyle gathering. Over 400 of the nearly
1,000 cars being offered have now crossed the block, with more than 90 percent
being sold. The auction continues Saturday and Sunday at WestWorld and will
attract upwards of 140,000 visitors during its four-day run.
Pro wrestling champion Bill Goldberg was among the many who successfully
purchased their favorites. The popular wrestler purchased a 1969 Ford Mustang
Boss 429 for $60,000. Other highlights included five rare supercharged 1957
Ford Thunderbird "F" models that sold for prices ranging from $36,000 to
$60,000; an impeccable and rare 1959 Muntz Jet Convertible for $69,000; and a
Concours-quality 1957 Porsche Carrera GT vintage race car, one of two cars in
the auction owned by Jerry Seinfeld, that sold for $60,000.
The Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction traditionally serves as the
barometer for the coming year, and this year is no exception. "Sales are up,
volume is up and prices are strong," commented Craig Jackson, president of
Barrett-Jackson. "The number of quality cars consigned, particularly the ones
with no reserve, is up significantly from previous years. If the first two
days are any indication of what's in store for this weekend, and for classic
car auctions worldwide, 2001 will be an exciting time."
Racing legends Carroll Shelby and Bob Bondurant, and Indy 500 winners Arie
Luyendyk and Bobby Unser were also among the many celebrities and enthusiasts
in attendance. Adding to the days' excitement was automobilia auctions, an
expansive and lifestyle pavilion and the Robb Report Fashion Show, presented
by Chrysler, where top haute-couture designer Dana Buchman personally
introduced her spring 2001 collection.
Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the World's Greatest Car Auction
received a rousing kick-off Wednesday night as more than 5,000 invited guests
enjoyed lavish food and music in a festive Opening Night Gala. Rock legend
Alice Cooper also got into the act by auctioning off one of his Fender
guitars, raising $3,500 for his Solid Rock Foundation that helps
under-privileged inner-city youth.
