Southern California Gas Prices Hold Steady in February, Says Auto Club
LOS ANGELES--Feb. 13, 2001--Gas prices in Southern California remained stable in February after a four-month decline from record highs, according to the Fuel Gauge Report from the Automobile Club of Southern California. The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel is $1.60 in Southern California, the same as in January and 17 cents higher than this time last year. Nationally, the February average price for unleaded fuel is $1.49 a gallon.
February is typically the month with the lowest gas demand, so prices traditionally drop at this time of year. But oil industry analysts say that skyrocketing natural gas prices have had an impact on fuel costs because some natural gas components are used in fuel additives.
Some of the lowest Southern California gas prices can be found in La Habra, where the average is $1.42 a gallon. The highest prices are in Santa Barbara and Blythe, where motorists are paying an average of $1.81 a gallon.
In Northern California, the average price is $1.68 a gallon. Prices have fallen in San Francisco, but they are still the region's highest at $1.84 a gallon. In Las Vegas, drivers are paying an average of $1.61 a gallon.
