REMINDER/Child Seat Safety Day -- Washington Traffic Safety Commission

    --May 11, 2001--

In an effort to help parents and others learn more about proper installation of booster seats and child car seats, the Washington Traffic Safety Commission and KLSY-FM have teamed with Progressive Insurance, Sprint PCS and AAA Washington to provide free child safety seat and booster seat check-up inspections during Buckle Up America Week, May 20 - 26, 2001.
Certified car seat technicians will conduct free inspections, which usually take about 20 minutes to complete. Parents simply show up in their cars with their car seats and booster seats inside. Free literature and booster seat discount coupons will be available on site. Free booster seats, provided by AAA Washington, will be raffled every half hour.
Traffic crashes are the leading cause of childhood fatalities and serious injuries for children under age 14. Observational studies show that four out of five children riding in child safety seats are improperly restrained. The risks are especially high in Washington state, where 86 percent of children between the ages of four to eight are riding in seat belts when they should be in booster seats.
A new law in Washington will require booster seats for children up to age six and 60 pounds. It takes effect July 1, 2002.
