59 Drivers To Represent CON-WAY at Nationals
ANN ARBOR, Mich.--July 23, 2001--This year, Con-Way Transportation Services (CON-WAY) is proud to be sending 59 drivers to the American Trucking Association's 2001 National Truck Driving Championships. This is the largest number of drivers ever sent by any one trucking company in the history of the competition. Driver sales representatives from the company's three less-than-truckload carriers won 59 state-level first-place finishes this year, surpassing the company's previous record of 49 state champions, which was accomplished last year. This year's competition takes place in Minneapolis, August 22-25."These men and women are among America's best drivers. They give their personal and professional best. Their total dedication to safety, customer service and on-time performance make not only CON-WAY proud but also the trucking industry," said Gerald L. Detter, president and chief executive officer of CON-WAY. "Each is a state champion with a distinguished safety record. Collectively they represent a standard of excellence unmatched in the trucking industry. As a group, these 59 men and women have driven over 70 million miles without an accident, that's an average of 1.2 million miles per professional," added Detter. The company regularly receives safety awards from the American Trucking Associations (ATA) and service awards from customers.
More than 380 state champions from across the country will compete in nine equipment classes with the ultimate goal of winning the event's Grand Champion and National Champion titles. One driver will win Grand Champion honors and receive a championship ring and plaque. The title of National Champion will be awarded to the top point earners in each of the nine competing classes. Class winners will receive a cash award, plaque and a national champion belt buckle.
The ATA sponsors the annual event to promote highway safety. Drivers qualify for the national competition by winning at the state level in one of nine equipment classes. Competition is based on driving skill and knowledge of the trucking industry, equipment, safety policies, and safety regulations.
