Consolidated Freightways Honors Four Drivers

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah--July 23, 2001--Continuing a proud, 72-year tradition of highlighting the accomplishments of its professional drivers, Consolidated Freightways (CF) , the North American long-haul freight specialist, will formally honor four drivers who have surpassed three million accident-free miles.
Over the past few months, these professional long-haul drivers -- James W. Hatfield, Robert J. Shearer, Paul J. Ririe and Desmond R. Ricks -- have each surpassed an extraordinary safe driving plateau that is the equivalent of 120 trips around the world or 500 roundtrips between New York City and San Francisco. It typically takes a professional driver about 30 years to reach this safety milestone.
The drivers will be honored during a recognition ceremony from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 27, at the Varsity Room in the Rice Eccles Stadium Tower on the University of Utah campus, 451 South 1400 East, in Salt Lake City.
Attending the event will be CEO Pat Blake and President Tom Paulsen, along with coworkers and family members. "CF is honored to have four of the industry's safest drivers at our Salt Lake City facility," said Blake. "They each deserve our gratitude and recognition for reaching this safety milestone. What's more, they serve as safety role models for their fellow employees, future truck drivers and motorists alike."
The event will also mark the dedication of four CF tractors, which will honor each three million-miler. Decals describing the safety accomplishment of each driver have been affixed to the sides of each dedicated unit. In addition, an honorary bronze dash plaque has been installed in the cab of each unit. These newly dedicated trucks will be used for intermediate and long-haul freight transport throughout the United States. CF has honored 125 three million-milers around the country in a similar fashion.
CF also honors its three million-milers with $1,000 in Consolidated Freightways Corporation stock. Those reaching one- and two million-miles receive $300 and $500 in stock, respectively. All drivers surpassing one million-miles earn a commemorative plaque, lapel pin and a special-issue employee identification card. In addition, a nameplate honoring each driver is posted at the team member's hometown service center and at CF's headquarters in Vancouver, Washington.
Combined, these three million-milers have more than 130 years of service with Consolidated Freightways. James W. Hatfield began his driving career with CF in Chicago in 1966. He transferred to Salt Lake City in 1971. He and his wife Mary reside in Draper and have seven children and nine grandchildren. In 1967, Robert J. Shearer also started his CF driving career in Chicago, transferring to Salt Lake City in 1971. He and his wife Donna have one son and live in West Valley City.
Paul J. Ririe started driving for CF in 1971. He has been domiciled in Salt Lake City his entire career. He and his wife Phyllis reside in Salt Lake City and they have seven children. Desmond R. Ricks, who began driving for CF in 1972, has also been stationed at Salt Lake City throughout his career. He and his wife Helen live in Salt Lake City and they have five children and 16 grandchildren.
In 2000, CF's 12,000 drivers nationwide traveled more than 500 million-miles on America's roads and highways, averaging less than one preventable accident per million- miles. More than 4,800 CF drivers have surpassed one million-miles in their careers without a preventable accident, including 1,100 who have traveled more than two million-miles safely. Four CF drivers have reached the four million-mile plateau.
