GM's Vortec ASA 5700 V8 Engine Demonstrated Outstanding Power And Durability Through Two ASA Race Series Seasons

GM-Sponsored Michigan State University Team Executes Successful Development Project

INDIANAPOLIS - General Motors' Vortec ASA 5700 V8 engine, which powers all race cars in the American Speed Association (ASA) ACDelco Series, demonstrated outstanding power, durability and low maintenance through two race seasons. In addition, the GM-sponsored Vortec Engines/Michigan State University team of engineering students successfully completed its testing of advanced engine technologies in the 2001 series.

Based on the production LS1 V8, featured in the 2002 Chevrolet Corvette and Camaro, and Pontiac Firebird, the Vortec ASA 5700 put the stock back into stock car racing.

"We are proud of the success of the Vortec ASA 5700 V8 in the ASA ACDelco Series over the last two years and its proven ability to deliver outstanding power, fuel efficiency, rugged durability and required low-maintenance, all while performing under demanding race conditions," said Al Alvarez, GM Powertrain Vortec brand manager. "In addition, our exciting team of MSU engineering students did a great job this year in executing our development project, which was an opportunity to test advanced engine technologies that will make our vehicles even more powerful and efficient."

Proof of this successful performance is evident in the impressive numbers for the Vortec ASA 5700 V8 engine. Rated at 430 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, the engines have supplied ample power under race conditions, promoting the close, competitive racing for which they were developed.

ASA Timing and Scoring recorded more than 118,000 Vortec ASA 5700 engine miles in 19 of 20 events in 2001, including practice, qualifying, qualifying races and main events. The engine has now accumulated a total of more than 300,000 total competitive miles since its introduction in 2000.
