GM Cancels "Chevy Outdoors Magazine"

General Motors Corp. has closed the door on its Chevy Outdoors magazine.

Citing continued cost-cutting, the automaker confirmed that the winter 2001 edition -- which has just been distributed -- will be the last issue of the quarterly magazine.

Chevy Outdoors, launched 13 years ago, was a marketing tool mailed to 500,000 Chevrolet truck prospects. The magazine featured stories focusing on traditional outdoor activities like hunting, camping and fishing while showcasing Chevy trucks.

Dan Hubbert, a Chevy spokesman, did not disclose how much money was spent on the quarterly magazine.

"It was founded at a time when GM was becoming involved in outdoor identity partners like Ducks Unlimited," Hubbert said. "It's unfortunate, but it is an effort to stay flexible."

The magazine was published by C-E Publishing, a division of Campbell-Ewald, based in Warren.

Mark Benner, Campbell-Ewald's director of corporate communications, would not release details on what the loss of the magazine would mean to the firm, especially concerning employment. Benner said a statement would be released Monday.

Campbell-Ewald has been Chevy's only agency of record in its 90-year history.
