Senators Reid and Ensign Endorse Electric Fuel's Zero-Emission Bus Program

WASHINGTON, March 13-- Electric Fuel Corporation announced today that at a press conference held this morning at the Upper Senate Park, Nevada senators Harry Reid (D) and John Ensign (R) expressed their support for deploying the Electric Fuel zero-emission bus in Southern Nevada. The joint press conference was the highlight of two days of Washington demonstration drives of the revolutionary transit bus, which utilizes zinc-air fuel cells developed by Electric Fuel.

``This new technology could help ease three of the biggest problems facing our country today -- our dependence on foreign oil, the pollution in our air, and the growing traffic congestion in our cities. I have supported the development of this technology from its earliest days, and I'm thrilled to see how well it's turned out,'' said Senator Reid. ``I look forward to working with Electric Fuel in the future so we can put these buses to work.''

Senator Ensign said, ``I am pleased to see the progress made by Electric Fuel since I drove their zinc-air powered van on Capitol Hill a few years ago. I think the zinc-air bus could make significant contributions to our clean-air efforts in southern Nevada.''

Senators Reid and Ensign, as well as key officials from government agencies, rode around the nation's capital in the all-electric, zero-emission bus, as part of the first presentation of the Electric Fuel zinc-air fuel cell bus in Washington DC. This full-length all-electric transit bus is the first of its kind capable of driving a full day -- with air conditioning -- without refueling or recharging. The bus was built as part of a cost-share DOT/FTA program.

``Las Vegas is proud to have been a part of the pilot project and peer review for this project,'' stated Jacob Snow, general manager for the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada. ``Air quality and traffic congestion are two of the biggest challenges we face in a growing community such as ours. Technology such as this will help us address these challenges ensuring a better quality of life for our citizens. We look forward to evaluating this exciting new technology along with options for refueling infrastructure, and hope that other communities will soon follow suit.''

Electric Fuel Chairman Robert S. Ehrlich commented, ``We have proven that our technology can meet the technical requirements for a transit bus. Our next step on the road to commercialization is to put several such buses in service under normal operating conditions in a major US city. In terms of performance, cost and time-to-market, we think that our technology can win the race to commercialize zero-emission vehicles.''

Electric Fuel is planning the deployment of a demonstration mini-fleet of 3 to 5 zinc-air buses in day-to-day service, including the construction of a zinc fuel regeneration facility.
