Toyota Announces Best-Ever Sales Month in 45 Years of Business in the U.S

TORRANCE, Calif., June 3 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported a record sales month of 169,528 vehicles sold, surpassing last year's best-ever month, also set in May, by 1.4 percent.

"Consumers can see the economic downturn in their rearview mirror and the image keeps getting smaller," said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president and COO. "The road ahead is marked with signs for strong first-half industry sales."

Toyota Division celebrated a best-ever month with 147,730 units sold, up 0.6 percent over last year's all-time best-ever sales month. The Lexus Division shattered last year's best-ever May sales with an increase of 7.5 percent, or 21,798 units.

The all-new 2002 Camry led the pace with strong May sales of 43,414 units, up 10.7 percent from last May. Year-to-date Camry sales of 189,118 units make it the top-selling passenger car in America. The all-new 2003 Corolla enjoyed sales of 27,271 units, an increase of 7.0 percent. The Prius gas/electric hybrid sedan, which recently posted combined worldwide sales of over 100,000 units, recorded a best-ever May in the U.S. with 1,648 units delivered, an increase of 46.4 percent.

Strong Toyota light-truck sales show consumers gearing up for warmer weather and summer months. The Highlander mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) enjoyed a best-ever sales month with 10,602 units sold, an increase of 19.5 percent over last May. The Sequoia full-size SUV followed with its own best May sales of 6,743 vehicles sold, an increase of 8.0 percent over the same period last year. Tundra recorded best-ever May sales, with 9,238 units sold, up 5.5 percent over the same period last year.

Lexus Division's best-ever May was the result of record-breaking passenger car sales of 14,343 units, up 14.6 percent from last May.
