Auto Club: Southern California Average Gas Price Dips Slightly From May; Prices Relatively Stable, But For How Long?
LOS ANGELES--June 18, 2002--For the second straight month, the average price of gasoline in Southern California declined from the previous month, but the dip was only four-tenths of a cent per gallon, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California's monthly Fuel Gauge Report. The Southern California average price for regular self-serve unleaded gasoline is $1.610, down from the May average of $1.614. The current price compares with a state average of $1.63, which is up from $1.62. San Francisco area motorists now pay an average of $1.74, down from $1.75 a month ago.
The lowest average price in the state can be found in Redding, where regular self-serve unleaded gas can be pumped for $1.45.
Nationally, the average price for a gallon of regular self-serve gasoline declined one cent to $1.39. Georgia has the lowest state average at $1.23 per gallon.
"The slight decline in prices from last month indicates that the market found stability," said Auto Club spokesperson Carol Thorp. "Over the last couple of weeks, gasoline production has declined in California and inventories are becoming tight. We're beginning to see prices edging upward and they could be several cents per gallon higher by July 4th."
