GM'S Vortec Hp3 8100 V8 Powers Winning Entries In APBA Offshore Race Series In Cleveland

Vortec Power Team Captures First And Second Places

PONTIAC, Mich. - The Vortec Power Team captured two first and two second-place finishes in high-speed boats powered by the Vortec HP3 8100 V8 engine at the fifth race of the season for the 2002 American Power Boat Association Offshore Race Series August 9-12 in Cleveland, Ohio.

During the race weekend, the nine teams that comprise the Vortec Power Team competed in their respective race divisions in the Cleveland Offshore Grand Prix.

Team Vortec Extreme, racing a Vortec-powered Extreme Vee Bottom powerboat, captured first place in the Super Vee Light Single class with an average speed of 77.59 mph and a time of 44:05 for six laps. Team Vortec Extreme earned 142 points. Team Fury finished second in a Phantom Vortec-powered powerboat with an average speed of 76.96 mph and time of 44:26 and earned 131 points. High Noon racing came in third place in an Activator Vortec-powered powerboat earning 121 points with an average speed of 70.05 mph and time of 48:49.

In the Super Vee Light Twin class, Rodriguez Group earned 143 points with their first-place win behind the wheel of a Vortec-powered Cigarette powerboat with an average speed of 83.39 mph for seven laps and an elapsed time of 47:51. Team Pier 57 finished second in a Vortec-powered Fountain Vee Bottom powerboat with an average speed of 83.11 mph and time of 48:00. Team Pier 57 earned 132 points.

With five races into the APBA 2002 season, Team Vortec Extreme leads the points battle with 572 points in the Super Vee Light Single class. Team Fury is in second place with 521 points, and High Noon racing is in third place with 430 points.

In the Super Vee Light Twin class, Pier 57 leads the points standings with 582 points and UTZ Quality Foods is in second place with 532 points. Rodriguez has earned 522 points for a third-place standing for the first five races. The sixth race in the 2002 APBA Offshore Race Series, which consists of 10 offshore races at various venues, is August 23-25 in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Competitors in 10 race classes will continue to vie for points leading to the National Competition Oct. 18-20 in St. Petersburg, Fla., and the World Championship Nov. 18-27 in Key West, Fla.
