General Motors Donates Vehicle To Food From The 'Hood

Los Angeles-Based Food From The 'Hood Takes Delivery Of A New GMC Envoy XL

Los Angeles, Calif. - Students from Food From the 'Hood, a Los Angeles-based program that builds business skills and self-esteem in at-risk youth, are all smiles following the delivery of a new 2003 GMC Envoy XL donated by General Motors. The student entrepreneurs were part of a special ceremony recently at Lou Ehlers Cadillac-Pontiac-GMC dealership in Los Angeles where their executive director took delivery of the vehicle.

Food From the 'Hood was founded by a group of Crenshaw High School students in October 1992. The students restored the weed-infested land behind the school to start a garden where they could grow natural foods to feed the needy in South Central Los Angeles. They market and produce their own products, including various salad dressings, which can be found in grocery stores in Southern California. Profits are given back to the community and awarded through achievement awards to student managers. Each student earns points through garden work, demonstrations and business management training.

"Part of our mission is to give back to the community and to prepare students for the future," said Monique Hunter, Food From the 'Hood executive director. "We were in need of a new vehicle and we're thrilled that GM was able to help us by donating the Envoy. We'll use it to support our day-to-day business activities as well as to take several students on college campus tours."

To date, former student managers have graduated from major universities including Stanford, USC, UCLA, Shaw University and many others. The vehicle donation is an outgrowth of GM's ongoing diversity efforts. It was arranged by the Marketing and Sales to Women team, part of GM's Diversity Center of Expertise, in conjunction with the other promotions and marketing team members.

General Motors , the world's largest vehicle manufacturer, designs, builds and markets cars and trucks worldwide, and has been the global automotive sales leader since 1931. GM employs about 355,000 people around the world. More information on GM can be found at www.gm.com.
