Private Limousine Sales on the Rise

SPRINGIELD, Mo.--Sept. 4, 2002--The swoon in limousine sales since September 11 is showing signs of abating and the comeback is being lead by interest from individuals and corporations looking for more control over their personal safety and mobility.

George Lee, Vice President of DaBryan Coach Builders, Inc. says that industry sales since last September are off by about 75% from last year. However, in the past 60 days, DaBryan has seen a resurgence of interest in limousines, led by calls from corporations and well-healed individuals.

Typically, 90% of production at DaBryan is devoted to sales to the livery industry -- operators who hire out their limousines for weddings, nights out on the town, and the routine ferrying of corporate executives. The stock market slide and a reduction in travel since last September have dampened the demand for limousines in the livery industry.

While the livery trade is showing signs of re-generation, the real news is in the number of privately owned limousines that are being sold. The percentage of production devoted to private limousines at DaBryan has neared the 50% level and the trend shows no signs of slacking.

Concern for security, while present, is not the only factor driving private sales. Airport hassles mean that some short hop flights have been replaced by road trips -- and the utilitarian limousine is being born. Common amenities include lots of power ports for portable electronic devices, desks for on-the-go work sessions, GPS (navigational) systems that increase driver efficiency, and even seats that convert into a bed for sleeping.

For private use, the limousine as safe haven is gaining favor. With most states toughening up drunk driving laws and stepping up enforcement, many find that owning a limousine can be less expensive and much less stressful than even one DUI. When equipped with a full compliment of electronics and refreshment-ware, a private limousine can resemble a ball room at a five-star hotel. Getting there is not only safer, but fun too.

Lee says that while the industry still faces some tough days, the post-September 11 limousine market will be different not only from the standpoint of who is left to build them, but in who is lined up to buy them as well.
