AAA Chicago Urges Motorists to Prepare Cars for Winter

Offers Free Car Inspections at AAA Approved Auto Repair Facilities As Incentive

AURORA, Ill., Sept. 26 -- Most Midwesterners do not like to think about winter weather when temperatures are still in the 60s. However, while winter weather denial might be a reality for many, motorists should not deny their cars the simple preparation needed to help keep them running properly this winter.

"Vehicle stress and strain increases greatly during the winter months," said Steve Nolan, spokesman for AAA Chicago. "Minor deficiencies have the potential to turn into major problems. So, it's extremely important for motorists to take precautions before the weather gets too cold." In honor of Winter Car Care Month, AAA Chicago and its network of Approved Auto Repair facilities have teamed up once again to give motorists free, comprehensive car check-ups with professional automotive technicians.

Last year 70 percent of vehicles tested had a deficiency of some sort, an increase of 2.1 percent over 2000. The most common problems were dirty air filters; dirty or low motor oil; worn belts, hoses and wiper blades; and insufficient anti-freeze strength.

The clinics will occur at all of AAA Chicago's Approved Auto repair facilities throughout Illinois and northern Indiana. Motorists are encouraged to call their local AAR facility during the month of October and request a free check-up. The 12-point inspection includes:

Battery check for loose cables and corroded terminals Anti-freeze check for strength in the radiator overflow reservoir Oil level check with the vehicle's dipstick Brake fluid level check Power steering fluid level check Automatic transmission fluid level check Inspection of all belts and hoses Inspection of the air filter Windshield washer fluid level check Inspection of windshield wipers Light and turn signal inspection Inspection of tire tread wear and inflation if necessary For a complete list of Approved Auto Repair facilities, motorists can log onto www.aaa.com or call (800) AAA-HELP.
