Tips To Care For Your Car (October Is National Car Care Month)

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 1 -- No matter what time of year it is, make sure your car is in top shape so it can perform efficiently and effectively to get you to where you need to go. The Pep Boys -- Manny, Moe & Jack -- offer tips that will keep your car running smoothly.

"Changes in the weather can adversely affect the performance of a vehicle if it hasn't been properly maintained," said Bruce Chidsey, vice president of service operations for Pep Boys, a leading automotive repair and service chain. "We believe that many problems, such as vehicles not starting or breaking down, as well as roadside emergencies, can be prevented with proper preparation."

Pep Boys' Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified technicians say that car care and preventative maintenance requires these important steps:

Motorists should always keep an emergency kit in their vehicles, no matter what the weather conditions are outside. Kits should include a flashlight (with fresh batteries and bulb), battery jumper cables, extra fuses, flares and a "Help" sign. In colder climates, an ice scraper, snowbrush and window/lock de-icer are important additions that should be kept in the home, office and car so they are easily accessible. If drivers are in areas known for sudden or severe snowstorms, a heavy blanket, energy bars, fresh water, a strong shovel and oil-dri for traction also belong in the emergency kit. Antifreeze, transmission fluid, engine oil and especially windshield washer fluid are critical for safe winter driving. Fluids should be checked frequently for proper levels, cleanliness, clarity, color and consistency. PEP BOYS' MANNY, MOE & JACK PROVIDE TIPS FOR YOUR CAR

Motorists should make sure their oil's thickness (viscosity) is right for that particular time of the year. The correct type of fluids can be found in the vehicle owners' manual or by asking a Pep Boys automotive technician. Drivers need to be sure their wiper blades completely clear the windshield in three passes and interior window areas should be cleaned regularly to cut down on surface film and to speed up defogging. In cold weather, it is imperative that the vehicle's heater and defroster (both front and rear) function properly to quickly warm the car and clear the windows. Also, high/low beams, turn signals and brake lights need to be functioning at optimum levels. "Batteries help start your car, tires hold it to the road and your brakes bring you to a safe stop," adds Chidsey. "These three systems need very careful attention so they can do their job, especially in the toughest conditions." For added peace of mind, drivers should consider replacing batteries more than five years old.

Remember -- with these tips and a minimal amount of time -- your car will continue to run smoothly.
