AAA Texas: Weekend Gas Watch; Gasoline Prices Continue to Set New Record Highs in Texas
HOUSTON--Feb. 21, 2003--Gasoline prices continued to set new record highs this week, according to the Weekend Gas Watch, compiled by AAA Texas. The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline at popular destinations for motoring trips. The statewide average price for a gallon of regular self-serve fuel is $1.59 - a penny increase since a week ago, and only two cents away from the record high of $1.61 a gallon. Last year, motorists were paying $1.07. San Antonio has the least expensive fuel at $1.56 a gallon - up a tenth of a penny compared to a week ago. The Dallas/Fort Worth area saw the biggest increase of nearly two cents a gallon. Both cities average $1.60 a gallon - the most expensive fuel on the list.
"The Austin - San Marcos area and Corpus Christi, which set new record highs last week, went even higher this week," said Rose Rougeau, spokesperson for AAA Texas. "Low oil inventories and high prices for crude oil coupled with fears of war are being blamed for the recent run-up at the pumps."
