GRAND BLANC, MICH. - ACDelco is celebrating the automotive repair profession by sponsoring its third Technician of the Millennium competition. The competition encourages ACDelco's Total Service Support technicians to test their knowledge and expertise against one another to see who can lay claim as the most professional and proficient in the business.

Five Technician of the Millennium III Regional competitions were held across the United States from February to May, with 10 semifinalists competing in each geographic region. The winners of the five regional competitions are:

* Ricky Kelley, Buck's Automotive Inc., Tucson, Ariz., ACDelco Western Region;

* Charles Murphy, Russel's Automotive, Hampton, Ga., ACDelco Southeast Region;

* Scott Hager, Scott's Auto Service, Troy, Mo., ACDelco South Central Region;

"These eight guys know they are among the very best technicians in the aftermarket," said Susan Christophersen, ACDelco manager of service training. "Every one of them has demonstrated superior skills and professionalism to get to this level."

The competition among ACDelco-affiliated technicians began last fall with more than 2,500 participants completing a 100-question written test that covered all aspects of vehicle repair. The top-10 scoring technicians in each region advanced to the regional finals. There they were judged on their professionalism and accuracy in diagnosing and repairing actual vehicles.

All technicians were provided with identical vehicles and the same tools, parts, computers and diagnostic equipment, which they used to diagnose and repair various "customer concerns."

"The purpose of the Technician of the Millennium competition is to recognize and support the expertise of ACDelco technicians," said Todd Helmkamp, ACDelco program developer and Technician of the Millennium III coordinator. "Those who made it to the regional finals are a select group who deserve congratulations on a job well done."

The Technician of the Millennium III finals in October will be similar to the regional competition, but at an advanced level. Along with the prestigious title, the champion will win a new Chevrolet Silverado SS truck.

All eight finalists also receive an ACDelco-sponsored vacation for two, a Snap-on(r) Special Edition Technician of the Millennium III toolbox, a Vetronix MTS 5100 engine analyzer, a subscription to GM Service Information, an SPS Pro Reprogramming System, a Fluke 87 DVOM, SPX tool package and various other prizes.
