'Light Pipe' Technology Creates 125 Custom-Colored Instrument Cluster Backgrounds

Color-Configurable Gauges One of Several Products Delphi is Supplying on the '05 Mustang

TROY, Mich., Dec. 11 -- Delphi Corp. today announced an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) industry-first with its color-configurable instrument cluster for the next-generation 2005 Ford Mustang. This unique feature allows the driver to modify the instrument cluster to provide a personalized color combination.

Delphi's color-customizing instrument gauges can be subtly or dramatically illuminated using three light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The colors combine to provide six preset shades -- green, blue, purple, white, orange and red, and can be selected from a menu within the vehicle's message center. With Delphi's innovative "light pipe" technology, the driver can mix and blend the intensity of five levels of red, green and blue to create 125 different custom-colored backgrounds.

"This innovative feature is another industry first for Delphi and we are pleased to provide this and other technologies to Ford as we continue to grow our electronics business," said Bill Collins, Delphi customer director for Ford. "This technology is especially exciting because it represents another step in providing consumers with the ability to create a more personalized driving experience."

The six-gauge cluster, with selectable-color backlighting, will be available as an option on the base and GT model of the 2005 Mustangs. Delphi is also providing four other products on the new Mustang including the intrusion and inclination sensor module, smart electrical distribution center, 6 CD in-dash audiophile radio and the Delphi passive occupant detection system. The 2005 Mustang will arrive in showrooms next year. In the meantime, a screen saver preview of the new color-configurable instrument cluster is available at www.fordvehicles.com .
