Toyota intends to show the visitors of this year's Paris Motor Show that performance and environment can coexist in the same package. As a proof, Toyota will bring to the French capital the Toyota D-4D 180 Clean Power concept car. This vehicle is equipped with the new Toyota D-4D Clean Power concept engine - simultaneously one of the cleanest and most powerful diesel engines in its category.

The Toyota D-4D 180 Clean Power concept car intends to show how far modern diesel technology can go. Under its bonnet can be found the Toyota D-4D Clean Power concept engine, an all-new unit in the 1.9 - 2.2 litre category. A production version of this concept engine will be launched during 2005, when it will offer both class-leading performance and low emissions. This innovative powerplant gives a whole new meaning to the expression "Clean Power" by setting the benchmark in the 1.9 to 2.2-litre category: class-leading power and torque and the world's lowest combined NOX and PM (particulate matter) emissions for diesel engines (when installed in the Toyota D-4D 180 Clean Power), made possible thanks to the use of the unique Toyota D-CAT (Diesel Clean Advanced Technology).

At the heart of the Toyota D-CAT system is DPNR (Diesel Particulate Nox Reduction System and Toyota's new piezoelectric common-rail system. Fully integrated with these core technologies are various other control systems and devices which collectively combine to make this the most effective solution yet devised to reduce diesel engine emissions.

The Toyota D-4D engine develops around 180 DIN hp (130 kW), a figure substantially above the 1.9 to 2.2-litre category and only matched by higher-displacement V6 diesel engines. The same applies to the maximum torque of 400 Nm.

This uncompromised balance between performance and environment is only possible by using the best in diesel technology, including the unique Toyota D-CAT.
