Second Annual National Float Day A&W Restaurants to Give Away Free Root Beer Floats

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--June 13, 2005--A&W(R) Restaurants will give away a free Root Beer Float with any purchase on National Float Day, Monday, June 20, from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. This is the second annual Root Beer Float giveaway from A&W Restaurants, America's longest-running quick service franchise chain.

"To celebrate our brand's 86th anniversary and the beginning of summer, we're bringing back National Float Day," said Bill Ruby, Brand Leader for A&W Restaurants. "Last summer was the first time we've given away Root Beer Floats and it was fun for our customers and employees alike. We're looking for this year's event to be even bigger."

Regular A&W Root Beer(R) Floats will be available free of charge with any purchase between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. at participating A&W All American Food(R) locations. Even the smallest purchase qualifies; buy even an order of fries on June 20, and you'll get a free Root Beer Float.

In addition to a free Root Beer Float with any purchase, customers can also enjoy savings on five other A&W favorites. An oversized flyer with five coupons will be distributed in A&W Restaurant markets in the days before National Float Day.

A&W's summertime celebration continues in early July when the chain introduces the limited edition 2005 A&W collector mug. The mugs have been favorites of collectors since the 1920s. The 2005 edition is a 20-ounce glass mug imprinted with a full-color image of the A&W mascot, the Great Root Bear(R).

Ken Polsson, 43, of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, knows firsthand the appeal of collecting A&W Root Beer mugs. He has been collecting A&W mugs since the 1970s, and has about 80 glass mugs in his collection, including one that dates back as far as the 1920s.

Polsson also is the author of a very comprehensive timeline detailing the history of A&W mugs, which he began working on in 1995, and for which he has used more than 500 books, magazines and other sources for research.

"As a teenager, I had a four-inch-tall A&W 'bull's eye' mug, and loved its thick glass and half-heart shaped handle," Polsson said. "The thick glass is the unique appeal of A&W Root Beer mugs. No other restaurant or soft drink company that I know of has anything like them."

Collector mugs will be available at participating A&W restaurants in the United States, as well as from the A&W Restaurants web site: www.awrestaurants.com.
