Highway Safety Leaders Demo Measures for Pioneer Days Travel

National Share the Road Safety Tour Visits Salt Lake City
to Save Lives on Utah Highways

On a typical day as many as 235,000 vehicles travel I-15 through Salt Lake
City. Most automobile drivers are not aware of what they can do to avoid
                     accidents with tractor-trailers.

Who: The American Trucking Associations (ATA), the Utah Highway
Patrol, AAA Utah, and the Utah Trucking Association.

What: A demonstration of highway safety measures for saving lives
during Pioneer Days travel will be conducted for local news
media, including "ride-alongs" in tractor-trailers, as part of
the national Share the Road safety tour visiting Salt Lake City,
            UT.

  When: Thursday, July 21, 2005, 10:00 AM

Where: Flying J Travel Plaza, 885 W. North Pointe Circle, (I-215, Exit
            28) North Salt Lake City, UT (see driving directions below.)

Summary: Professional truck drivers with millions of miles of accident-
free driving, ATA, the Utah Highway Patrol, AAA Utah, and
others, will demonstrate safety measures critical to saving
lives on Utah highways. A static demonstration with simulated
highway lanes will show how cars and trucks get into accidents.
A professional truck driver will provide truck ride-alongs for
news reporters and photographers, providing tips on summer
driving, blind spots, driving in construction zones, driver
distraction, and stopping and following distances.

This safety advice is critical for Salt Lake City drivers
            because:

            * Around three quarters of all truck-involved fatalities are
inadvertently initiated by car drivers (Federal Motor Carrier
              Safety Administration).
            * 35% of all truck-involved highway fatalities occur in a
truck's blind spots (Federal Motor Carrier Safety
              Administration).
            * Watching this demonstration will help reduce accidents and
              save lives.

Directions: The Flying J Travel Plaza is located at the intersection of
I-215 at exit 28 and Redwood Rd. From downtown take I-80
north to I-215 north, Exit 28.
