Asahi Breweries to Start Experimental Study of Biomass Ethanol Using High Biomass Sugarcane

Tokyo (JCN) - Breweries will start an experimental study of biomass ethanol in collaboration with the National Agricultural Research Center for Kyushu Okinawa Region (KONARC). The project will be conducted in Ie Island, Okinawa.

From January 2006, the company and the center will grow sugarcane with high biomass, produce biomass ethanol from the sugarcane, and finally manufacture E3 gasoline, automobile fuel that contains biomass ethanol.

Four governmental agencies will participate in the study project: the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Ministry of the Environment, and the Cabinet Office.
