Authors Offer Tips for Saving Gasoline and Getting Better Fuel Mileage

NEW YORK, Sept. 7 -- As gas prices increase, Julie Sussman and Stephanie Glakas-Tenet, authors of the newly released DARE TO REPAIR YOUR CAR: A Do-It-Herself Guide to Maintenance, Safety, Minor Fix-Its, and Talking Shop, offer the following tips for saving gasoline:

  * Drive the speed limit

  * Don't warm up your car for more than 2-3 minutes in the winter and
    1 minute in the summer

  * Keep your tires properly inflated

  * Have your tires balanced, rotated, and aligned

  * Change the air filter regularly

  * Carpool

  * Remove any heavy and unnecessary items from your car, especially a
    luggage carrier

  * Get regular maintenance checkups for your car

  * Change the oil and oil filter every 3000 miles or 3 months

  * Don't speed up to a red light or stop

  * Make sure the fuel cap properly fits the gas tank
