Driving While Cell'ing A No-No In Connecticut

Headsets Help Connecticut Residents Comply With New State Law

HARTFORD, Conn., Sept. 26 -- On October 1, Connecticut police will begin ticketing motorists who use hand-held mobile phones without headsets while driving. For many, cell phone conversations while driving have become very common, but safety should always remain top priority. Plantronics , maker of mobile headset devices, wants to help ensure that motorists who drive in Connecticut and the tri-state area are correctly and safely using headsets as the new law takes effect.

With hands-free legislation passed in New York in 2001 and New Jersey in 2004, the entire tri-state area is now a hands-free zone. Connecticut will have one of the most severe penalties of the three states, with any person who violates the law subject to a $100 fine.

Plantronics offers these tips intended to keep Connecticut drivers safer while on the road:

-- Choose a headset that is comfortable for you. Before you use it in
the car, familiarize yourself with using your mobile phone and headset
     together.
-- Utilize your phone's voice dialing or one-touch dialing features or
dial the number in advance. If possible, place the call while stopped
     in traffic.
-- Position your headset before starting the car and keep your cell phone
stored in an easily accessible location.

"There is a wide variety of headsets consumers can select from in order to comply with the new law," said Libby Walikis, director of Mobile Products, Plantronics, Inc. "Whether the headset is corded or wireless, fits over-the- ear or under-the-ear, people can select a model that suits their specific wearing preference and lifestyle."

Bluetooth-enabled headsets, such as the award-winning Plantronics Explorer(TM) 320, are appropriate for commuters who want to have clear conversations without wires. The new Plantronics MX505 headset with WindSmart(TM) technology provides commuters with reduced wind noise while talking on the phone. The bendable boom provides optimal fit and superior call clarity in nearly every environment.

For more information about hands-free legislation and to find the right headset for their needs, consumers may visit www.plantronics.com/findit. Connecticut residents can also visit their local electronics retailer and cell phone carrier to purchase a Plantronics headset.

Plantronics recognizes that there are occasions when driving circumstances make talking on a mobile phone -- handheld or hands-free -- unsafe. In these instances, motorists should pull over or hang up to protect the safety of themselves, their passengers and others on the road.
