Blue Sky Productions Documents the History of Automotive Product Development in PBS Special

LIVONIA, Mich., Oct. 13, 2005 -- From the producers of "Autoline Detroit" comes a brand new documentary that chronicles the intricate process involved with bringing a new car to market. Blue Sky Productions has produced a one-hour program for Detroit Public Television called "A Car is Born."

The program, premiering on WTVS in Detroit on Tuesday, November 8 at 9:00 p.m., will take the viewer on a journey starting with the initial design concept of an automobile and continuing through engineering, testing and manufacturing. It shows, from a historical perspective, how the process has evolved from hand drawings and clay modeling to the high-tech digital world of product lifecycle management.

John McElroy, veteran automotive journalist and host of "Autoline Detroit," is the executive producer of "A Car is Born." According to McElroy, "Most people have no idea of the process it takes to bring a new car to market. Fewer still are aware of how high-tech this process has become. This program will obliterate forever the misperception that the auto industry is a technological laggard."

In producing the program, Blue Sky used historical footage, computer graphics, interviews with top auto company executives and special effects to engage the viewer in the industry's progression over the past 100 years.

Plano, Texas based UGS Corp., a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, acted as technical advisor for the project. Funding for the program was made possible by Hewlett- Packard, Intel, EDS and Microsoft.

Blue Sky has produced a number of television documentaries including "The Car of the Century" in 2000 for public television and in 2004 "The 10th Anniversary Woodward Ave. Dream Cruise" special for cable's Speed Channel. "Autoline Detroit," a half-hour weekly program for, of and about the automotive industry, is now in its ninth season on Detroit Public Television.

In conjunction with the program's debut on WTVS, a black-tie premiere gala will take place at the Fox Theatre on Monday, November 7 at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are $100 in advance and proceeds benefit Focus: HOPE. To obtain tickets for "A Car is Born" premiere please visit http://www.carisborn.com/ .
