Vote on CAFE Standards for Passenger Cars Expected Before Memorial Day

Washington DC May 11, 2006; The AIADA newsletter reported that the House Energy and Commerce Committee yesterday narrowly approved a bill allowing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to set fuel economy standards for passenger cars and reform how the CAFE system works, reports The Detroit News.

The vote is expected to reach the floor before the Memorial Day recess. Some lawmakers, as expected, proposed an amendment raising the fleetwide fuel economy to 33 miles per gallon for all vehicles by 2015.

The amendment was voted down in committee.
