Dunlop Tires Searches for 'Complete Driver' for Drivers Cup

AKRON, Ohio, May 15, 2006 -- Consumers who want to race are signing up to compete in racing's most unique competition, a multifaceted take on the "Ironman of Driving."

A household name in Europe, Dunlop Drivers Cup is looking for 12 amateur automotive enthusiasts to compete in a qualifying event to represent the United States in the international competition. Unlike other racing events, Dunlop is searching for the "complete driver," not the fastest hotshoe.

Drivers Cup, entering its ninth season, includes off-road, motocross, all- terrain vehicle and on-track competitions. Enthusiasts have until July 15 to apply for Drivers Cup at http://www.dunloptires.com/driverscup. Entrants must be at least 21 years old and have a valid driver's license.

Janice Consolacion, brand planning manager for Dunlop Tires in North America, said tire retailers and automotive media also will be added to the mix for the first time. Four additional seats are available for tire retailers who want to test their driving skills at the U.S. Regionals competition at Virginia International Raceway in September.

"We're looking for individuals who share our passion for driving and have an appropriate level of experience across all event categories. Two-person teams will be formed to represent the United States and compete with the best amateur drivers from around the world," she said. The World Finals will be held in Europe early next year.

"We believe adding enthusiast media and tire dealers makes sense. The two groups are naturally competitive; they'll add an interesting dimension to the U.S. Regionals as they compete in special classes.

"And competitors will have a chance to put Dunlop's SP Sport Maxx ultra- high performance street tire to the test," she concluded.

Dunlop officials in Europe originally started Drivers Cup to showcase Dunlop's racing heritage and its broad range of passenger, truck, motorcycle and all-terrain-vehicle tire lines. Last season, Dunlop USA placed two teams in the World Finals.

Dunlop is a global tire brand with an excellent reputation among performance car enthusiasts. Well known for its prestigious original- equipment fitments and sports car racing heritage, Dunlop is also a key supplier to sport compact enthusiasts featuring "tuner" tire sizes and race series sponsorships.
