LA Auto Club: Monthly Gas Price Average Sets New Record
LOS ANGELES--May 16, 2006--The average price of a gallon of gasoline in Southern California vaulted 51 cents from April to May obliterating the prior record monthly average gasoline price set last fall, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California monthly Fuel Gauge Report. The Southern California May average price for regular self-serve gasoline is $3.417, up from the April 11 average of $2.903. The prior record was set in September 2005 at $3.03.
"Gas prices have climbed $1.06 since December, due to a variety of oil and gas trader concerns about production in Nigeria, Iran and Venezuela as well as a scarcity of the additive, ethanol, in the southeast part of the nation," said Auto Club spokesperson Carol Thorp. "However, federal reports have indicated that high gas prices have reduced demand in recent weeks, and reduced demand should moderate prices."
Statewide, the average price for May is $3.378, up from is $2.860, in April. This eclipses the prior all-time record high of $3.054 that was set on Sept. 9, 2005. The lowest average price in the state is in San Rafael, where regular is selling for $3.223. Blythe reports the state's highest average price at $3.608.
Nationally, the average price is $2.943, up from $2.686 in April. The state with the highest gas price average is Hawaii at $3.400. Oklahoma has the lowest average price of $2.712.
