Statement of UAW President Ron Gettelfinger on the Death of Former Detroit City Council President Maryann Mahaffey

DETROIT, July 27 -- UAW President Ron Gettelfinger issued the following statement on the death of former Detroit City Council President Maryann Mahaffey:

"Detroit's working families have lost a true friend and tireless fighter for social and economic justice. Throughout her remarkable career in public service, Maryann Mahaffey was never afraid to take on tough issues or powerful special interests. She didn't worry about ruffling feathers or rocking the boat; her only concern was doing what she believed was in the best interests of the people of Detroit.

"Maryann Mahaffey was outspoken, courageous, principled and, most of all, absolutely devoted to this city and its people. To put it simply, Maryann Mahaffey loved Detroit and Detroiters loved her. She leaves an enduring legacy of public service at its very best."
