TACH Reader Questions Lack Of Diesels in U.S.

Reader John Hendrick of Alaska comments on our story that questioned why there is a lack of diesel powered cars here in the U.S.

Dear Mr. Snide:
Yes, I agree with you that diesel cars, if they were available would cut back dramatically on how much fuel we use.

It also shouldn't cost $4000.00 more for a diesel engine vs. a gasoline engine. I will not buy another gasoline engine car. If the U.S. auto manufacturers want to increase sales, they will start marketing cars that consumers want to buy.

I am only going to consider a hybrid if its a diesel hybrid (much more efficient). Jeep is manufacturing the Commander, their 7 passenger vehicle in Europe with a new ultra clean diesel.

It's not available in the U.S. with that engine though. It's like our energy policy is driven around the gasoline industry.

Diesel is easier to refine and burns more efficient, two things that would reduce the gasoline industry profits.

Thanks Mr. Hendricks...we still question who or what is preventing our drivers here in the U.S. a way to save 30-40% on their fuel costs...what the heck is really going on...if you have an idea please let me know... msnide@theautochannel.com.
