**August 13 - Pros and Cons of Electric & Plug-In Vehicles*

*
Worcester, MA --* On Sunday, August 13 at 10:00 p.m. (EST), WICN/90.5
FM, the NPR affiliate serving Central New England, will broadcast and
webcast Episode 5 of "This New Car: Promoting Clean, Mean Driving
Machines," a 13-week special edition of /The Business Beat/. In "This
New Car," Steve D'Agostino, host of /The Business Beat/ since 1995 and
principal of Best Rate Of Climb <http://www.bestrateofclimb.com> in
Worcester, MA, moderates a panel of experts. They are: Jim Dunn of the
Center for Technology Commercialization <http://www.CTC.org> in
Westboro, MA;* *Gilles Labelle of Westboro Toyota's Hybrid Center of
Massachusetts <http://www.hybridcenterma.org> in Westboro, MA; and Craig
Van Batenburg of the Automotive Career Development Center
<http://www.auto-careers.org> in Worcester, MA.

In Episode 5, "This New Car" explores the pros and cons of Electric &
Plug-In Vehicles. The energy used to power the motors can be obtained
from a variety of sources including fuel cells or batteries arranged
into a Battery pack. Strictly solar-powered, passenger-carrying electric
cars and model cars are used only for technology-proving races. A
variety of battery-electric vehicles have been produced, ranging from
golf carts and neighborhood electric vehicles to SUVs and sports cars.
The chief problem with battery-electric vehicles is their limited range
in comparison with gasoline-powered vehicles and the limited number of
charge/discharge cycles provided before battery replacement is required.
The problem of range could be addressed with gas-electric hybrid
vehicles. They use an electric motor and grid-rechargeable batteries for
acceleration and slow speed driving, with the ability to switch to
gasoline power for cruising. A number of hybrid vehicles are being sold.
However, none of these has grid-rechargeable hybrid capabilities.
