When to Hang Up the Car Keys?

AutoWeek Special Report In April 2 Issue Examines Elderly Drivers

By 2030, one in four drivers will be over age 65

DETROIT, March 29 -- With life expectancy rising and baby boomers aging, the issue of elderly drivers is becoming a factor in more and more accidents on America's roads. The April 2 issue of AutoWeek magazine looks at the sensitive subject of reevaluating licensing laws and adding special requirements for the aging population.

AutoWeek Senior Editor Kevin Wilson delves into the public policy issue that can't be decided only on age because every driver is an individual.

According to the article, AARP, the advocacy group for people over 50, and others in the field envision graduated licenses for seniors that would downgrade privileges step by step until such time -- if ever -- as the driver hangs up the keys. This is much like teens do when privileges are added as they become more confident and skilled. Unfortunately, state licensing rules are all over the map.

"As states undergo financial pressures, periodic reevaluation becomes impossible," said Wilson. "They tend to ignore retesting and instead rely on mail-in or online driver's license renewals to save money."

The three main effects of aging on driving skills include vision degradation, slowing of cognitive skills and motor impairment.
