Mothers against Drunk Driving Seeks Volunteers for Pilot Program

TAMPA, Fla.--If you live in or around the Tampa area, MADD Floridas Traffic Observer Program (T.O.P.) is currently seeking volunteers who can devote several evening hours each month to observing traffic and reporting erratic driving. Under this newly formed Pilot Program, Mothers Against Drunk Driving will arrange for specialized training for these Traffic Observers so that they may be most effective in identifying and reporting drivers who may have had too much to drink.

This program is only intended to report the potential for problems, said MADD Floridas Executive Director, Don Murray. Once a report is phoned in, it will be up to the investigating officer to determine if the driver is DUI or not.

According to Murray, Traffic Observers will not pursue, engage or in any way, interact with subject vehicles. They will only observe and report. Much like a neighborhood watch program where someone notices and reports a shadowy subject crawling into a house through an open window, it will be up to the investigating officer to determine if a crime is underway of if it is simply a homeowner who is locked out, continued Murray.

If you would like to be considered as a T.O.P. volunteer contact the MADD Florida State Office at (813) 935-2676 or contact Don Murray at don.murray@madd.org.
