A White Christmas Around the Great Lakes

State College, Pa. -- December 24, 2007 -- AccuWeather.com reports winds whipping around a low pressure system moving through eastern Canada on Christmas Eve will ensure a white Christmas for many in the Northeast, with some areas getting more than their fair share of snow.

The storm that lashed the Upper Midwest with blizzard conditions Sunday also spread heavy rain across the lower Great Lakes. Today, winds crossing the open water of the lower Great Lakes will spark an outbreak of lake-effect snow before the winding down later today.

The Winter Weather Center reports that some areas downwind of Lake Ontario will receive up to 2 feet of snow, while lesser amount fall elsewhere around lakes Erie and Ontario.

The strong winds will create areas of blowing and drifting snow that will cause driving problems, especially in upstate New York. The Severe Weather Center lists the lake-effect warnings, watches and advisories in effect, along with flood-related warnings in central New York and northeastern Pennsylvania.

Temperatures through Christmas will return to seasonal "normals" after a warm weekend in much of the East. The blustery winds today will create RealFeel(r) temperatures that will make it feel much colder.
