DETROIT, April 25 -- Monday, April 28 is the annual observance of Workers Memorial Day. UAW-represented GM locations will hold events to commemorate workers who have lost their lives or been injured on the job, and to promote awareness of workplace safety.

At General Motors' facilities across the country, UAW members and GM salaried employees will observe Workers Memorial Day in a variety of ways. Activities include a viewing of a special health and safety video. Additionally, flags at each facility will be flown at half-staff, with a related moment of silence in memory of workers who have died from work-related injuries.

"We firmly believe that every working person deserves a safe and healthy work environment," said Cal Rapson, UAW Vice President and Director of the General Motors Department. "Workers Memorial Day offers an opportunity to learn from past incidents in order to prevent future accidents or fatalities. Through these Workers Memorial Day activities we are reinforcing the message to UAW-GM people that workplace safety is our number one priority."

"UAW-GM's commitment to health and safety is unbendable," said Diana Tremblay, GM North America vice president, labor relations. "Our workplaces are already benchmarks for occupational safety, and, on this Workers Memorial Day, our pledge is to keep improving our record."

Workers Memorial Day is an internationally recognized observance to commemorate workers who have lost their lives or who have been injured in the workplace. It was first observed in the United States in 1989.
