Construction Set to Start on Sydney's Newest Star: Mercedes-Benz Sydney

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA – May 18, 2009: This week sees the start of construction on what is set to be one of Sydney’s most impressive luxury car showrooms: Mercedes-Benz Sydney.

This all-new state-of-the-art dealership forms part of the luxury brand’s ongoing long-term investment in top-level retail facilities, which has been driven by the company’s desire to provide its customers with service and brand experiences of the highest order.

Building works on this impressive all-new multi-million dollar new car dealership are now set to commence following the appointment of construction firm Hansen Yuncken as the facility’s builder. The highly experienced national construction company was appointed the task of building this flagship Mercedes-Benz retail store following a detailed tender process.

The new Mercedes-Benz Sydney is to be built on an extensive 17,000 square-metre site conveniently located on O’Riordan Street in Mascot, just up the road from Sydney Airport’s domestic terminal.

The facility will showcase not only the German car maker’s stunning range of luxury and sports cars; it will also be an architectural star.

The dealership is designed according to the luxury brand’s own ‘Autohaus’ architectural style and will be a stand-out feature on the busy airport-to-CBD route.

The facility will boast a variety of highlights, which include:

  • More than 1,800 square metres of new car showroom space over two separate floors;
  • Approximately 2,600 square metres dedicated to showcasing approved pre-owned vehicles;
  • A state-of-the-art workshop featuring more than 30 workbays equipped with the latest technology and tooling, as well as an experienced team of specialist staff to provide the best in aftersales support for customers;
  • Luxurious guest facilities such as comfortable lounge areas and a dedicated business centre for busy customers;
  • Rainwater harvesting for the operation of the dealership’s wash bays;
  • Energy-efficient light fittings;
  • High-performance glazing to reduce air-conditioning requirements; and
  • Waste separation facilities to minimise the amount of waste going to landfill

    The German car maker’s range of high-performance AMG sports cars will be displayed on a dedicated floor, which will also feature the marque’s range of million-dollar Maybach super-luxury cars.

    This area will also showcase the special Mercedes-Benz designo range of customising features. Here, customers who wish to further tailor their car with non-catalogue paint colours, upholsteries and carefully crafted timber finishes can see these special design elements first-hand before ordering their new car.

    Australia’s greenest car, the smart fortwo, will also have its own place in the new Mercedes-Benz Sydney. The range of pioneering city cars will reside alongside their Mercedes-Benz siblings inside the stunning Autohaus showroom.

    The award-winning range of Mercedes-Benz vans will also feature prominently with dedicated sales and service facilities.

    Speaking about the start of construction, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific, Wolfgang D. Schrempp, said the investment was a necessary and natural one, and sits at the centre of the company’s global plans.

    “This is a very exciting time for our customers, our staff, and our brand,” said Schrempp.

    “It is essential we provide our customers with the luxury experience they expect when they make us their first choice.”

    In underlining the importance of this significant retail investment, Schrempp touched upon the German car maker’s two key areas of focus, points made clear by global Mercedes-Benz boss Dr Dieter Zetsche at this year’s Geneva motor show.

    “There are two special elements that lie at the heart of Mercedes-Benz, both of which we don’t compromise, even in today’s economic environment. One is the ongoing intense research and development work that goes into making our vehicles; the other is our customers,” he said.

    “Construction of our new Mercedes-Benz flagship in Sydney constitutes a vital investment in both our customers and business, and also indicates the importance of the New South Wales automotive market for our company,” concluded Schrempp.

    Mercedes-Benz celebrated 50 years of business in Australia last year, and the role played by Mercedes-Benz Sydney has been a vital one for most of that time.

    Originally located in William Street, Sydney, it started life under the name of York Motors, which established its Mercedes-Benz division in December 1962.

    The business later relocated to its current site in Zetland, on the corner of Elizabeth Street and Joynton Avenue, where it has provided city-based customers with sales and aftersales support for many years.

    The all-new Mercedes-Benz Sydney is situated at 43-47 O’Riordan Street Mascot. Completion of this stunning luxury car dealership is expected to be next year.
