The BP oil disaster is now projected to be worse than the infamous Lakeview Gusher of 1910

AUTO CENTRAL - June 11, 2010: It was bad enough when "high speculation" estimates pinned the BP oil leak at 20,000 barrels a day, which equate to about 840,000 gallons of oil, but the lastest estimates are now at 40,000 barrels or a little more than 1.6 million gallons per day, every day.

I heard one oil industry wise guy say the other day that the loss of oil isn't really such a big deal when you compare it to the enormous amount of oil that is lifted out of the ground everyday and not spilled. I'm sure that's true, but it seems to me that he missed the point as to why the Gulf of Mexico situation is such a big problem.

Then last week there was the warning from another oil industry consultant who threatened that "we" should not adopt alternative fuels because by lowering the usage of gasoline it will only cause OPEC, et al, to raise prices in order to make up for lost profits - they wouldn't want to have to cut off financial support to the terrorists. I think it's safe to say that this guy also misses the point.

Use the sliding bar in the window above to calculate total lost oil at various leak-rates

We don't need gasoline to fuel our cars, vans and light trucks, and we don't need diesel produced from petroleum oil to fuel heavy trucks and stationary machines. Domestically produced alcohol, algae bio-fuels, CNG and propane can do the job. The oil wells that we currently have can more than easily supply the petroleum that industry requires for non-fuel products.

What we do need are politicians that will turn down oil-money bribes and "campaign contributions." This is not just true for the United States, it is true for most other industrialized countries as well. If you believe you are a patriot - of whichever country you are a citizen of - the patriotic thing to do is force the end of gasoline.
