ANGA Statement on U.S. Conference of Mayors Natural Gas Vehicles Resolution

WASHINGTON, June 14, 2010; America's Natural Gas Alliance (ANGA) President and CEO Regina Hopper issued the following statement on a resolution unanimously approved by the U.S. Conference of Mayors today calling on the federal government to encourage greater use of natural gas vehicles that run on a domestically produced, cleaner and less expensive fuel than diesel or gasoline. Natural gas -- both for clean power generation and transportation -- was a significant focus at the mayors' annual gathering, which concludes today. The event featured an NGV exhibit hall, a reception by the American Lung Association, honoring America's Clean Vehicles Champions, and the release of a list of examples spotlighting the decisions of mayors across the country to embrace clean energy through greater use of natural gas vehicles.

"We applaud the U.S. Conference of Mayors for uniting behind the important concept that natural gas helps clean the air and is an abundant American resource that can shift our reliance to domestically produced energy.

"The mayors' emphasis on natural gas should serve as a model for federal and state policymakers. By taking a page from these local leaders' playbooks, we can take advantage of our nation's vast natural gas resources to advance clean power generation and transportation.

"Fully 98 percent of the natural gas we use in the United States is produced right here in North America. Natural gas is about 30 percent cleaner than diesel fuel for transportation--and about 50 cents cheaper per gallon. When used for power generation, natural gas is twice as clean as coal when it comes to carbon emissions. It also has 80 percent fewer NOx emissions and virtually no sulfur dioxide, particulate matter or mercury. With their actions, mayors are demonstrating that they stand ready to help lead this change.
