DETROIT--May 2, 2012: U.S. Inventor Stanford Ovshinsky has been nominated as a finalist for the prestigious European Inventor Award, according to the European Patent Office in Munich, Germany.  The award, launched in 2006, is the first European prize to distinguish inventors who have made "an outstanding contribution" to innovation, economy and society.

Ovshinsky is nominated in the category "non-European countries" for the invention of nickel metal hydride batteries, which enabled the hybrid and electric car industry and is very important for solving the problems of CO2 and minimizing the use of gasoline since currently about 40% of CO2 comes from the transportation industry.  It is of interest that more than 4.5 million hybrid electric vehicles with nickel metal hydride batteries have been sold worldwide with many more being built.

The European Inventor Award ceremony will be held June 14 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Ovshinsky is president and chief executive officer of Ovshinsky Innovation LLC and Ovshinsky Solar LLC both based in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
