National Safety Council calls for 2013 Teen Driving Safety Leadership Award nominations

ITASCA, IL--April 24, 2013: The National Safety Council is accepting nominations for its 2013 Teen Driving Safety Leadership Award, supported by the General Motors Foundation. This award recognizes individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to reducing teen crashes and fatalities.
"Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens, and the most dangerous year of a teen's life is the year he or she receives a driver's license," said Janet Froetscher, president and CEO of the National Safety Council. "Recipients of this award understand these dangers and are taking action to make a difference on this issue."
Award winners will have clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of their programs or contributions, which may include the following efforts:
- Advocacy in communities, states or nationwide
- Leading efforts to adopt safe teen driving practices
- Promoting legislation based on the proven principles of Graduated Driver Licensing
- Changing behaviors to reduce teen crashes using proven, strategic methods
"We are proud to partner with the National Safety Council and recognize individuals and organizations dedicated to reducing teen car crashes," said Mike Robinson, GM vice president, Sustainability and Global Regulatory Affairs, a board member of the GM Foundation. "More than 5,000 people die each year in crashes involving teen drivers, and it is people and organizations like these that help save lives."
Nominations for the Teen Driving Safety Leadership Award will be accepted through June 26, 2013 . Individuals and organizations may nominate others and/or themselves. In 2012, the Teen Driving Safety Leadership Award was presented to ADEPT Driver and Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety.
