Pennsylvania Governor Corbett Urges Legislature to Pass Transportation Funding Plan

HARRISBURG, PA--Oct. 23, 2013: With a piece of concrete from Harrisburg's Mulberry Street Bridge in hand, Governor Tom Corbett today strongly urged legislators to pass a transportation funding plan.

"There are thousands of bridges across the state that are in the same condition as the Mulberry Street Bridge, but unlike the Mulberry Street Bridge which is slated for repairs next spring after years of crumbling concrete, there in no money to fix them," Corbett said. "This is just one more example of why the legislature must continue their bipartisan efforts and enact a comprehensive transportation bill. Safety should never be about politics," Corbett said.

Corbett said he is encouraged by progress on negotiations to reach an agreement on a transportation funding bill. He also encouraged the public to contact their elected officials to explain why an adequately funded transportation system is important to them.

"We've been under-investing in transportation for decades in Pennsylvania, and the legislature can change this by simply voting 'yes' on a solution," Corbett said. "This is not just a matter of personal convenience – it's about safety, our livelihoods, economic competitiveness and our quality of life."

"Our roads and bridges are crumbling, our public transportation systems are failing and our state's future depends on getting a plan done and frankly, Pennsylvanians deserve better than crumbling concrete," Corbett said.
