Expansion Will Improve Cross-Borough Access Between Brooklyn and Queens and Extend the Reach of Public Transit

car2go to Bring 100 smart Vehicles to Long Island City, Astoria, Woodside and Sunnyside Beginning August 29th

NEW YORK -- Aug. 11, 2015: car2go N.A., LLC announced today that it will bring its popular one-way carsharing service to Long Island City, Astoria, Woodside and Sunnyside in Queens, New York beginning August 29th. On the heels of exponential growth in Brooklyn, car2go will be making it easier for members to explore several Queens neighborhoods, and travel to and from Brooklyn at their own convenience. The move represents an important step toward an outer-Manhattan carsharing system, representing a new mobility option for the diverse and vibrant communities that are less accessible via public transit.

"Since the twilight of the trolley system many decades ago, there really hasn't been a reliable option for New Yorkers to travel between Brooklyn and Queens without going all the way through Manhattan," said car2go Brooklyn General Manager Tom McNeil. "Queens is a bustling hub of cultures, small businesses, international cuisine and affordable housing opportunities that have long been a challenge to access. We believe that with the rapid adoption of car2go in Brooklyn, we can help make it even easier for members to live and explore beyond the reach of the subway."

With the expansion into Queens, car2go's Home Area in the greater New York City area will grow by eight square miles to 44 square miles, and will include Astoria, Long Island City, Sunnyside and Woodside. In order to ensure members throughout the expanded Home Area will continue to enjoy convenient access to nearby shared vehicles, car2go will add an additional 100 smart fortwo vehicles to its fleet, bringing the total fleet size in New York City to 550 vehicles.

"We're excited to see car2go bring a sustainable and sensible transit option to Queens – extending the reach of public transit and helping our residents get the most out of our borough," said Queens Borough President Melinda Katz.

car2go has seen residents continue to embrace one-way carsharing in New York since the service's launch in Brooklyn in October 2014. Already, there have been more than a quarter of a million car2go trips throughout Brooklyn. With nearly 100,000 trips beginning or ending near the G train stops in Brooklyn, car2go has already helped complement the borough's existing transit infrastructure. Membership has also seen steady growth, and now stands at more than 27,000. car2go's success in New York reflects a broader trend toward flexible, affordable, and environmentally-conscious modes of transportation that complement the public transit system.
