LONDON -- January 21, 2016: Just days after the announcement that 2015 was another great year for new car registrations, Diesel Car magazine is shifting the focus onto the used car market as it announces the winners in the annual Diesel Car Used Car of the Year Awards 2016.

Second hand editions of every car sold in the UK were carefully examined, with winners announced in eight key categories. Expert judges assessed each car for all-round ability, value for money, fitness for purpose, as well as affordability, and came up with a shortlist of sixteen vehicles that deliver a winning formula for used car buyers. But with only one winner possible, the used car gurus crowned the DS 3 as our best buy for 2016.

The DS 3 also knocked the Ford Fiesta into second place in the small car category, while Ford’s Focus grabbed the top spot in the medium car category, beating the Audi A3. BMW’s 3 Series won the accolade of best large car, with the Skoda Yeti awarded the title of Diesel Car best crossover for 2016.

Ford’s Mondeo ran away with the honours in the estate car category, narrowly beating the Jaguar XF Sportbrake, and Honda’s CR-V won best 4x4. In the performance car category, the Skoda Octavia vRS accelerated ahead of its sister car, the Volkswagen Golf GTD, securing first place, while in the best Eco Car category, the long-running Toyota Prius grabbed the green gong.

In announcing the winners, Diesel Car editor Ian Robertson said “With a huge range of different makes and models on offer, it’s important to steer buyers in the right direction so they don’t end up buying a lemon”. He further commented “This year’s winner is the DS 3. It’s got the looks, the handling and it’s cheap to run, while the DS 3’s fresh face stands out from the used car crowd.”

The Used Car of the Year Awards issue goes on sale today, 21st January 2016, online, via iTunes and at all good newsagents.
