Is the Effort Towards Public Transit Worth It? New Research Paper - Why People Drive by PSDI

VICTORIA, BC, Nov. 1, 2016 - Policymakers, planners, traffic engineers and anyone who is involved or cares about transportation planning must understand the numerous factors and values that play into the consumer decision to drive. Public infrastructure decisions and the policies behind them are the focal point of a new research paper, which seeks to underline the need for transit policy rooted in evidence. 

The study 'Why People Drive' offers the reasons consumers maintain car ownership even with better commuting options, cloud-based driving options (Uber and Lyft) and car sharing (Modo, Zip Car).  Further, the research explores consumer preferences, values, and attitudes, showing they have not shifted as much as policymakers have hoped.

Providing recent statistics, charts and the unique challenges related to the urban commute, we believe PSDI's paper is worthwhile for publications exploring transportation policy at the municipal, provincial/state and federal level. As well, the research findings are similarly worthwhile for automobile, driving and transit columnists. 

Urban transportation planning concerns have been top of mind for politicians and planners in recent years. Also, vast sums of money have been spent on public transit and bike lanes to try and change travel behaviors. These initiatives have had little success, mainly because planners and decision-makers rely on old transportation concepts - such as single-origin destinations - that are out of step with the lifestyle choices and needs of today's urban and intra-urban populations.

We expect policy readers will be surprised and pleased with a thorough discussion of the factors that go into consumer transit decision making, resulting in a more reasonable discussion of transportation policy evaluation. The report can easily be adapted for further research, features and list-based editorial content.
