Power, Springs, and Tech, oh my!

All week long as I test drove the new Tundra, I had men of all ages lean out of their car windows and shout, "Hey man, that's a badass truck !" I nodded to each, agreeing that the new look for Toyota's big boy, was eye-catching and quite cool. Coupled with a twin turbo V-6, some upgraded tech, and a rep for reliability, it looks to please its loyalists and attract some folks.

The standard version of the twin-turbo V6 creates 389 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy is rated at 18/23/20 mpg with rear-wheel drive. The truck is steps right out and has plenty and cruises like the ship that it is thanks in part to a lighter double wishbone suspension up front. The multi-link rear suspension and solid axle with coil springs replace the old leaf springs for a softer glide over all surfaces.

If your driving routine is mostly city streets and retail parking lots, you will really appreciate the birds-eye camera system when parking in tight quarters. The big 14-inch touchscreen really helps.

Stepping up into any of its 4 doors you will be greeted by an electronically cued automatic running board - that got thumbs-up reviews from short limbed passengers.

The heated and cooled front seats of synthetic leather can be adjusted 8 ways and do the trick of being comfortable for folks of all sizes. The sightlines are already strong given the height of the cab. That seating elevation gives you a safer, therefore calmer, energy to the drive. But be careful. It may look like you are going 45, but 65 looks like that when you sit high.

Lift the back seat up and behold a storage space for tools, flashlight, first aid kit, etc

- active lane control
- automatic high beams

Last but hardly least, the Tundra has a 12,000-lb towing capacity
