March Gas Prices Up Slightly, Says CSAA

SAN FRANCISCO, March 17 -- Retail gas prices in northern
California and Nevada continue to rise, the California State Automobile
Association (CSAA) reported Monday.
Self-serve unleaded averages $1.37 a gallon in northern California, up two
cents compared to CSAA's February 20, 1997, Fuel Gauge Survey.
The average for self-serve unleaded has risen six cents in San Rafael to
$1.37. In San Jose and San Mateo, the average has climbed two cents to $1.39
and $1.41. Hayward and Sacramento's averages rose two cents to $1.40 and
$1.36. Oakland and Santa Rosa's averages are up one cent to $1.38 a gallon.
Stockton and Fresno's averages rose one cent to $1.37 and $1.29.
However, the Santa Cruz average dropped three cents to $1.36 a gallon.
Monterey's average dipped one cent to $1.37. (See accompanying chart for
detailed price changes)
The regional averages for self-serve unleaded in northern California and
Nevada are up 2 to 6 cents compared to last month.
The national average for self-serve unleaded gasoline is $1.29, up eleven
cents compared to one year ago.
"Gasoline production has not reached full capacity in California due to
the partial shutdown of several refineries for maintenance and the recent fire
at the Tosco Martinez plant. Therefore, less than abundant gasoline
inventories and strong demand are effecting prices," said CSAA spokesman Ron
Kennedy.
In Nevada, the average for self-serve regular unleaded has risen two cents
to $1.37. The Las Vegas and Reno averages rose one cent to $1.36 and $1.39.
Utah's average for self-serve regular unleaded dropped two cents to $1.23
a gallon. In Salt Lake City, the average fell two cents to $1.25. However,
Provo's average rose one cent to $1.22.
Motorists may see pump prices at individual retailers which vary from the
survey averages.
CSAA provides an array of automotive, travel, financial and insurance
services to 3.7 million members in California, Nevada and Utah.
