June 27 -- Chrysler Corporation announced today that the 1997 Dodge Viper RT/10 Roadster will carry a suggested retail price of $66,700, including a $700 destination charge. The 1997 Dodge Viper RT/10, which goes into production this summer, is the next chapter in the Viper story that began with the original Viper RT/10, introduced in 1992. The next-generation Viper RT/10 Roadster incorporates many of the advancements seen in the Viper GTS Coupe, which made its debut for the 1996 model year. Yet the 1997 Viper RT/10 Roadster stays true to its heritage by continuing to deliver the most exhilarating driving experience of any open car in production today. "Dodge Viper quickly became a legend in its own time and continues to stun automotive enthusiasts worldwide with its sheer power, superb handling and bold styling -- all the hallmarks of a pure American sports car," said Ray Fisher, General Manager of the Dodge Division. By sharing the same 450 horsepower (335 kW) V-10 engine, suspension, tires, brakes, transmission and adjustable pedal system, the next-generation Viper RT/10 Roadster is almost mechanically identical to the Viper GTS Coupe. New roadster features include standard power glass windows replacing the plastic side curtains, dual air bags, electronic door latches and an electronic security system. A compact disc player and air conditioning are standard for 1997. In addition to the soft top, the 1997 Dodge Viper RT/10 Roadster has as standard equipment a removable body-color hard top that has been redesigned to increase headroom slightly. Both the hard top and air conditioning may be deleted for a lower base price. The hard top is a $2,500 delete option, while air conditioning is $1,000. For 1997, the Dodge Viper RT/10 Roadster is offered in two color schemes: blue metallic with white painted stripes or solid red. SOURCE Chrysler Corporation
