Miller Canfield: Mitsubishi SettlesDETROIT, Aug. 29 -- Walter B. Connolly, Jr., a principal in the law firm of Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone, P.L.C., appeared on "The Today Show" this morning in connection with the settlement of the class- action lawsuit filed by the EEOC alleging sexual harassment against Mitsubishi's Normal, Illinois plant. Miller, Canfield represented Mitsubishi in the lawsuit, with Connolly as the lead defense trial counsel. "We believe the settlement is good for the company," said Connolly. "It is fair and equitable," he said. "Mitsubishi has consistently maintained its innocence. It is time to look to the future. A settlement was right under the circumstances." Connolly also said, "We believe that this was a settlement totally satisfactory to the company after we were able to evaluate the facts of the case." The multimillion dollar case involved 27 women who accused the company of condoning sexual harassment in the workplace. The suit sought back pay with interest and benefits as well as compensatory and punitive damages. Mitsubishi promised to donate $100,000 to women's causes in the Bloomington-Normal area as part of the settlement. Connolly specializes in class-action litigation and sexual and racial harassment litigation. He recently represented a major university in one of the most significant cases in the history of the Title IX Civil Rights Act. He has defended 52 class-action cases and U.S. government investigations as lead counsel.
