Subaru Sales Set New Records; Best Retail Sales In Over Nine YearsCHERRY HILL, N.J., Oct. 1 -- Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA) today announced its September sales figures -- it's the best retail sales month in over nine years. Subaru recorded a sales total of 13,465 units -- up 24 percent over the same period in 1996. Overall, Subaru year-to-date sales are up nine percent over the same period last year. The Legacy model line led sales with 8,804 units -- an all-time record for Legacy retail sales. The Subaru Outback also celebrated its best sales month ever. The sport utility wagon accounted for 5,356 units of the Legacy line-up. Forester, the company's all-new passenger car-based sport utility vehicle, posted sales of 2,825 units. The vehicle, which the automotive industry refers to as a "hybrid," combines the features and benefits of a typical truck-based SUV with the safety and performance features of a passenger car. Forester sales started in July 1997. Total Impreza Wagon sales are up three percent over the same period last year. Year-to-date sales of the Impreza Wagons tower over year-to-date 1996 sales by 73 percent. "The Subaru sales momentum continues to build," said Fred Adcock, vice president-sales. "We believe it's the result of a strong product line-up and equally strong marketing and communications programs that connect with our target audiences." Headquartered near Philadelphia, the company markets and distributes Subaru vehicles, parts and accessories through a network of nearly 630 franchised dealers across the United States. All Legacy models sold in the U.S., including the Outback, are produced at the company's American manufacturing plant, Subaru-Isuzu Automotive, Inc., near Lafayette, Ind.
