Automotive Youth Educational System, Inc. Announces Startup Funding

DETROIT, Oct. 8 -- The Automotive Youth Educational System,
Inc. (AYES) announced three major funding sources at the AYES National
Advisory Board Meeting held October 7 and 8, at Meadowbrook Hall in Rochester
Hills, Michigan. The newly formed non-profit organization has received
funding from the United States Department of Labor and Education, the Pew
Trust of Philadelphia and the National Automotive Dealers Association (NADA).
"We are delighted to be the recipient of several sizable contributions,"
stated Stan Moore, president of AYES, Inc. "These donations and grants are a
positive sign that our efforts are valued and seen as a viable resource to
move the needle in the service repair industry. Perhaps even more
significant, the funding gives us an opportunity to do something positive for
young people aspiring to gain a skill that will provide a lifetime of
employment." The non-profit organization has received over one million
dollars in a six month period.
One of the more noteworthy contributions is from the U.S. Department of
Labor and Education for $535,000. These funds will be used to accelerate the
rollout to schools and for research and evaluation. The Pew Foundation has
awarded AYES $300,000 which is ear marked for curriculum development. Also,
the NADA has provided a grant for $100,000 for human resource staffing.
AYES, Inc. was created to address an Industry-wide concern with the
increasing shortage of adequately trained automotive service technicians for
the more than 20,000 automotive dealers throughout the United States. The
program features a unique partnership between business, education, dealers and
students with strong parental support. Currently running in 11 states
involving 31 high schools and over 300 dealers, AYES seeks to have over 1,000
participating high schools by the year 2001.
